Chandipur, also known as Chandipur-on-sea is a popular sea resort on the Bay of Bengal in Balasore, Orissa. Chandipur is 16 kms away from Balasore town. According to locals, the sea at Chandipur looks like a glimmering sheet of silver on a full moon night; hence, the name ‘Chandi’(silver) ‘pur’. The beach is unique for the phenomenon of sea waters receding about 5kms from the shore during low tide and returning at high tide. This happens twice a day. It is an enthralling experience to walk on the sea bed during the ebb and collect shells and driftwood left behind by the receding waters. The virgin sands and emerald hued casuarinas on the shores add to the spectacle of Chandipur. For a visitor seeking peace and solitude amidst natural beauty, Chandipur is the ideal retreat.
